How To Access The Room Alert Telnet Menu

Your Room Alert Monitor has a Telnet menu* that can be used to:

  • apply basic settings if the Room Alert Monitor’s local web interface is not accessible
  • apply special settings that aren’t available in the device’s local web interface
  • access advanced troubleshooting tools

* The Telnet menu is not available on Room Alert S models or the Room Alert 3 Wi-Fi.

You can access your device’s Telnet menu through Windows Command Prompt, Mac Terminal or a PuTTY session. Select one of the methods below for instructions. (Using Windows Command Prompt is the preferred method. Our Technical Support Team is most familiar with this method.)

Using Windows Command Prompt

You must have Telnet enabled on your Windows system in order to complete the steps below. Telnet is disabled by default in Windows versions Vista and above. Please see our FAQ How To Enable Telnet In Windows (Versions Vista And Above) for help.

1. Open Windows Command Prompt.

  • You may find Windows Command Prompt at the following path:
    • Windows 7 & 8
      • Start–> All Programs–> Accessories–> Command Prompt
    • Windows 10
      • Start–> All Apps–> Windows System–> Command Prompt

2. At the prompt, enter the following command:

  • telnet <IP address of your Room Alert unit> 9999
    • Example: telnet 192.168.2.123 9999

3. If you are prompted for your Room Alert Monitor’s password, enter it and then press the Enter key on your keyboard. Otherwise, simply press Enter.

  • You must press Enter within a few seconds or you’ll get a “Connection to host lost” message. If you see that message, press Enter to get the prompt back and re-enter the telnet command from Step 2.

4. The Telnet menu will then appear.

Using Mac Terminal

To access the Telnet menu using Mac Terminal, please follow these instructions:

* These instructions require Telnet, which may not be available on newer versions of system software (including macOS Mojave and macOS High Sierra).

1. First, open a Terminal window.

  • Press Command + Space on your keyboard to use Spotlight. Then type “terminal” and select Terminal from the list of programs.

2. At the prompt, enter the following command:

  • telnet <IP address of your Room Alert unit> 9999
    • Example: telnet 192.168.2.123 9999

3. If you are prompted for your Room Alert Monitor’s password, enter it and then press the Enter key on your keyboard. Otherwise, simply press Enter.

4. The Telnet menu will then appear.

Using PuTTY

You may download PuTTY, a terminal emulator program, free from the Internet.

You must have Telnet enabled on your Windows system in order to complete the steps below. Telnet is disabled by default in Windows versions Vista and above. Please see our FAQ How To Enable Telnet In Windows (Versions Vista And Above) for help.

1. Open PuTTY.

2. Select Session in the navigation bar to the left.

3. In Host Name, enter the IP address of your Room Alert Monitor.

  • In the example shown below, the IP address of the Room Alert is 192.168.2.123.

4. In Port, enter 9999.

5. In Connection Type, select Telnet.

6. Then select Open at the bottom of the screen to begin the Telnet session.

7. If you are prompted for your Room Alert Monitor’s password, enter it and then press the Enter key on your keyboard. Otherwise, simply press Enter.

  • You must press Enter within a few seconds or the session will disconnect.

8. The Telnet menu will then appear.

In the Room Alert Telnet menu, you will see device details, including the model, MAC address, and firmware version.

You will also see up to 9 “Change Setup” options, as shown below. (Menu options differ slightly between certain Room Alert models.)

At the “Your Choice ?” prompt, you may enter the number that corresponds with the following options.

  • Network Configuration
    • Set the static IP address, gateway IP address and subnet mask for your device.
    • Change your Telnet password.
    • Edit the device name.
    • Change the Ethernet Speed / Duplex and MTU Size.
  • SNMP Configuration
    • Set your SNMP community name.
    • Enter IP addresses for SNMP traps.
    • Send SNMP values in 2-digit format instead of 4-digit.
  • Email Configuration
    • Enable SMTP Email.
    • Configure your mail server IP address, Email Recipients list, ‘From’ (Return) Address, SMTP Port and SMTP Timeout.
    • Disable the Email footer.
    • Disable the DST adjust for the timestamps in Email headers.
  • Reboot Unit
    • Manually trigger your device to reboot.
  • WiSH Sensor Configuration (not pictured)
    • Legacy feature to reset WiSH / WiSPR sensors on the Room Alert 32W and Room Alert 26W.
  • Advanced
    • Reset your Room Alert password.
    • Enabled tracing and edit the trace port.
    • Disable the device’s local web interface.
    • Disable SNMP queries.
    • Disable TFTP firmware updates.
    • Disable the Telnet menu.
    • Disable the discovery port 30718.
    • Disable the Light Tower / Relay web toggle.
    • Edit the number of scans before sensor disconnect.
  • Factory Defaults
    • Delete all saved settings from the device, including static IP address settings.
  • Exit Without Save
    • Exit the Telnet menu without saving any changes you may have made.
  • Save and Exit
    • Save any changes you’ve made within the Telnet menu and then exit the menu.

To run Windows Command Prompt as an administrator:

  • Windows 7 & 8
    Right-click on Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
  • Windows 10
    Right-click on Command Prompt, select More and then select Run as administrator.

If you are using this client, you should configure the general SNMPv3 Credentials, but leave the Read / Write SNMPv3 Credentials section blank.

Room Alert Manager - Compatible Devices

The latest version of Room Alert Manager supports only the devices below.

It does not support any legacy Room Alert or TemPageR models.
